Young People’s Substance Misuse Services (SMS)

Our web based Young Peoples Substance Misuse needs assessment application (SMS) was developed with Drug & Alcohol Action Teams (DAATs) to quantify the number of young people in need of substance misuse services by treatment tier (Tier 2 and 3) and by gender, age, ethnicity and geography.

“Fitting the bill on everything we need” (Safer Bristol Partnership, 2006)

The SMS uses local and national data and has been combined with our extensive evidence-based literature and research to ensure a robust baseline for estimates and analysis. Depending on access rights, the user can enter and analyse local planning assumptions, updating the local data as required.

The data within the SMS meets the NTA needs assessment standard, matches the KPIs for Every Child Matters: Change for Children Young People and Drugs and profiles need against the Health Advisory Service 4 Tier system.

The SMS is being used by DAATs to model and plan services, using the information to prioritise, negotiate and commission for the best services to meet local needs. The SMS application brings capability to the DAATs to target services and spending most effectively.

Access to this web based needs assessment application is designed to meet all DAATs requirements. This includes:

  • full access* yearly subscription which allows users full-time access
  • full access* phased (time period limited) subscription for users who only wish to use the SMS during the planning cycle
  • one-off report - providing a snapshot of the current situation

*The full access options enable users to enter local data and planning assumptions

Current DAAT SMS clients include: Bristol, Bath & North East Somerset, Gloucestershire, Hillingdon, Leicester City, Leicestershire, North Somerset, Northamptonshire, Rutland, Sheffield.
